Albania's Ionian coastline is one of Europe's best-kept secrets. With crystal-clear water, dramatic cliffs and almost no crowds compared to neighbouring Greece, the Albanian Riviera offers world-class coastal driving that rivals anything in the Mediterranean.
1. Vlorë to Himara — The Queen of the Riviera
This 75km stretch of the SH8 coastal road is the jewel of Albanian driving. The road twists through the Llogara Pass at 1,025 metres — where you'll find paragliders launching over the cliffs — before descending dramatically to the coast. Every hairpin reveals a new turquoise cove below. Allow at least 2 hours and stop at every viewpoint.
2. Himara to Saranda — Hidden Coves and History
South of Himara, the road hugs the coast through Qeparo, Borsh (home to Albania's largest beach) and the picturesque village of Lukova. The 50km drive feels like a journey through a National Geographic spread. Stop at the ancient ruins of Butrint, a UNESCO site just outside Saranda.
3. Durres to Vlorë — Long Sandy Beaches
The northern Riviera runs from Durrës down to Vlorë along flat coastal roads fringed with pine trees. The beaches here — Golem, Kavajë, Divjakë — are wider and sandier than the south. Less dramatic than the Ionian coast but wonderfully peaceful, especially in spring and autumn.

4. Lake Ohrid Scenic Loop
Cross the eastern border into North Macedonia and drive the full loop around Lake Ohrid — one of Europe's deepest and oldest lakes. Return via Elbasan for a complete loop. The border crossing is quick and the lake scenery is extraordinary.
5. Shkodër to the Albanian Alps
Head north from Shkodër towards the Valbona Valley, passing through the dramatic Komani Lake gorge (accessible by ferry). The road becomes increasingly wild and mountainous as you approach the Albanian Alps. 4WD or an SUV recommended for the final sections.
Albania's coastal and mountain roads reward explorers willing to get behind the wheel. With Hana Rental's fleet — from economical compacts for the coast to capable SUVs for the mountains — you have the perfect companion for every route.
