The Albanian Alps — known locally as the 'Bjeshkët e Namuna' (Accursed Mountains) — are one of Europe's last great wilderness areas. Driving into this remote landscape is an unforgettable adventure, but it requires some preparation.
Getting There: The Roads
The main route runs north from Shkodër through Bajram Curri to the Valbona Valley. Much of the road is now paved, but sections near Theth and parts of the Valbona Valley can be rough gravel. An SUV or crossover is strongly recommended — but many sections are passable in a standard saloon in summer.
The Koman Lake Ferry
One of the most spectacular ways to enter the Alps is by taking the morning ferry across Lake Koman. The 2.5-hour boat ride through the gorge — with cliffs rising hundreds of metres on either side — is one of Europe's most dramatic journeys. The ferry runs daily in summer (departing around 9am from Koman).
Theth: The Hidden Valley
Theth is a remote village accessible via a winding mountain road from Shkodër. The Blue Eye waterfall, the historic Lock-in Tower (Kulla e Ngujimit) and the stunning Grunas Waterfall are all within walking distance. Accommodation in traditional guesthouses is available, but booking ahead is essential in July and August.

Valbona: The Trekker's Paradise
Valbona is the gateway for the famous Valbona-to-Theth hike — a 6–7 hour trail over the Valbona Pass. The valley itself has excellent guesthouses, crystal-clear swimming holes and some of the finest mountain scenery in Europe. Visit in June for wildflowers or September for golden light and fewer crowds.
What Car to Take
For Theth and Valbona, we recommend an SUV from our fleet — the Nissan Qashqai, Hyundai Tucson, or Audi Q5 are all ideal. The Audi Q5 with quattro is the best choice for the steeper gravel sections. Avoid taking a low-clearance compact car in wet weather.
The Albanian Alps offer some of the most rewarding driving in Europe — raw, dramatic and completely off the tourist trail. Rent an SUV with Hana Rental, pack your hiking boots and head north for an adventure you won't forget.
