One of the great advantages of basing yourself in Tirana is how quickly you can reach the coast. Albania's capital sits roughly equidistant between the Adriatic coast (45 minutes west) and the beginning of the spectacular Albanian Riviera (3 hours south). Here are the best beach day trips from Tirana, organised by driving time.
45 Minutes — Durres Beach
Durres is the obvious first choice for a quick beach fix from Tirana. Albania's largest port city has a 10km stretch of sandy Adriatic coastline — the only genuinely sandy beach easily accessible from Tirana. Beach clubs, seafood restaurants, jet skiing and parasailing make it an energetic day out. While there, visit the extraordinary 2nd-century Roman Amphitheatre right in the city centre — one of the largest in the Balkans.
1 Hour — Golem Beach
Just south of Durres, Golem is calmer and more family-friendly. The water is gently sloping and shallow, making it ideal for children. Several hotels and resorts line the beach. Less lively than Durres but more spacious and relaxed — a better choice if you're after a quiet day rather than a party beach.
1.5 Hours — General's Beach (Plazhi i Gjeneralit)
General's Beach is one of the Adriatic coast's hidden gems — a sheltered bay backed by pine trees and rocky cliffs, with turquoise water that feels closer in quality to the Ionian coast. Local tavernas serve fresh fish. The 'General' in the name refers to a communist-era general who reputedly had the beach closed for his personal use. Today it's open to everyone and one of the best-kept secrets on the northern coast.

1.5 Hours — Spille Beach
Spille is exceptional for families with young children: the water is extremely shallow for a long distance offshore, making it a safe and gentle swimming environment. Wide sandy stretches and affordable restaurants add to the family appeal. A relaxed, unhurried alternative to the busier beaches closer to Durres.
2–3 Hours — Bay of Lalzi
Lalzit Bay (Bay of Lalzi) offers soft sand, turquoise water and an upscale resort atmosphere — arguably the most beautiful stretch of the Adriatic coast north of Durres. Several luxury villa developments have sprung up here, but the beaches remain accessible to day visitors. The drive from Tirana is easy on modern roads.
3+ Hours — The Albanian Riviera
For those willing to make a full day of it, the start of the Albanian Riviera — with beaches like Dhermi and Himara — is reachable in 3 hours from Tirana via a good road. The water quality is dramatically better than the Adriatic coast: crystal clear, deep blue, and set against mountain backdrops. Better as a 2-night trip, but a very long day trip is possible if you leave early.
